Puerto Rico International Book Fair 2008 FIL-PR

Start date: 11/12/08  End date: 11/16/08

The tenth edition of the Puerto Rico International Book Fair (FIL-PR) will run from 13 to 18 November. The fair’s theme is “Children’s and Adolescent Literature” and it aims to encourage children to read from an early age.

This annual event makes Puerto Rico a meeting point for educators, editors, booksellers, distributors, and writers of books in Spanish.

For the second year running the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture (ICP) is helping to organize this literary encounter.

An award ceremony will be held on 14 November with prizes for several well-known people such as the actor, film-maker and poet Jacobo Morales, who will be receiving the National Grand Prize.

In 2007 Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Mexico (through publishers Siglo XXI) participated for the first time, as did the United States with the attendance of delegates from the Dominican and Puerto Rican community of New York.

Representatives from 126 publishing houses as well as those from Spanish ministries and regional governments also attended. There was further international representation with the participation of members of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (Clasco), who led the encounter “Latin America, building the future today”.

 Course description:

Puerto Rico will hold its 10th International Book Fair (FIL-PR) from 13 to 18 November 2008 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.

The FIL-PR is a non-profit making organization registered with the Department of State of Puerto Rico, which in ten years of service to the community has held 16 book fairs.

During these ten years FIL-PR has become the country’s most important cultural showcase.

The fair attracts educators, librarians and writers to a space where they can share the unique world of books and reading. The fair also attracts a huge section of the school community from the public education system as well as from the island’s private schools. It will also attract 5,000 book professionals with considerable spending power.

The primary objective of the fair is to create a space for selling, distributing and promoting books in Spanish in the markets of the United States, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Puerto Rico’s location and its special political, social and economic relationship with the United States means that it has historically been responsible for facilitating the marketing of books in Spanish for Spanish speakers in the States.
