Iberdrola Renovables to expand Whitelee wind farm in Scotland

Iberdrola Renovables will expand its wind farm in Whitelee by 217 megawatts (MW) to a total of 539 MW, using technology from Alstom. The extension to the wind farm is due to open in 2012, according to a statement by the Spanish company. The extra capacity will consolidate Whitelee’s position as the largest on-shore wind farm in Europe. To carry out the project, the company will install 69 new ECO 100 wind turbines each one capable of producing 3 megawatts (MW), and six ECO 74 turbines with a capacity of 1.67 MW each.

When the extension has been completed the annual production of the wind farm will be equivalent to the electricity consumed by more than 300,000 households and will prevent the emission of around 840,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The Whitelee wind farm is located south of Glasgow in Scotland and currently has an installed capacity of 322 megawatts. It is one of the most emblematic wind energy facilities in the world and is home to Scotland’s first renewable energy education center.

The Whitelee extension is included in the agreement between Iberdrola Renovables and Alstom to install a total of 250 Alstom wind turbines in nine of its wind farms with a combined capacity of 500 megawatts. Iberdrola Renovables is present in 23 countries and is a world leader in its sector, both in terms of installed capacity, with more than 11,400 MW installed by the end of July 2010, and in terms of production, generating nearly 13.0 billion kWh between January and June 2010.
