The family company Destilerías Arehucas, based in Gran Canaria, has been in existence for 125 years. Set up in 1884 as a sugar plant, today it is Spain’s best known rum manufacturer. It has grown continuously since the outset, incorporating various other liquors into its range. Today, the third generation of the family is running this company, which now has its sights set on the foreign market, according to Spanish newspaper Cinco Días.
Following its long history, Arehucas became the leader in the regional market in 1980, and began to expand in the market of mainland Spain. This started to bear fruit after it set up an export company 10 years ago. Today, Arehucas has a wide range of products, from rums to spirits, after having acquired Cocal, made up of various small Canary Island liquor producers. This manufactures rums such as the best-selling Carta de Oro, and the 20-year-old Capitán Kidd, as well as liquors such as the banana flavored Banadrink, and a liquor made from bienmesabe, a local Canary Island dessert made from almonds, egg yolk and honey.
Currently, the company is operating in more than a dozen countries in Europe, some of the most important of these being Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy, and it now wants to focus its strategy on consolidating this growth abroad. This group has rapidly increased its sales in Europe, where it has just entered Sweden and France, and over the course of this year it is looking to enter the United States and the United Kingdom too. In fact, Arehucas is now awaiting licenses from the American authorities to enable it to export to the United States. The company also has a presence in China, where it is working hard to increase exports. Arehucas is expecting to register growth in excess of 10% in its leading export markets.
