Spain leads world bulk wine exports

According to the latest data from Spain’s Wine Market Observatory (OEMV) presented during the World Bulk Wine Exhibition held in Amsterdam, Spain led the world bulk wine market in 2008 with sales of almost €350 million and around 8.8 million hectoliters exported at an average price of €0.40 per liter.

The trade in table wines, country wines and wines with designation of origin accounted for 53% of all wine industry exports from Spain and 17% of total value, according to the data for 2008.

Despite these positive results, the average price of Spanish wine is still lower than that from countries such as France or Italy, which have higher average prices of €1.10 euros and €0.55 per liter, respectively.

In 2009, Italy has led the world in terms of the amount earned from bulk wine sales, with €311 million, followed by Spain, France with €272 million, Australia with €160 million, Chile with €139 million, the United States with €133 million, and South Africa with €132 million.
