The Government of the United Arab Emirates approached various Spanish companies during the International Desalination Association Congress, held in Dubai, with the offer to take part in new integral water cycle management projects, according to the Spanish daily newspaper Cinco Días.
A series of contacts, backed by the Spanish Government, and various firms represented by the ATTA and Asagua employers’ associations, including subsidiaries of Acciona, ACS, Veolia, OHL, FCC, Ferrovial, Comsa and Suez, were able to hold meetings with UAE authorities, during which they discussed the imminent launch of two construction contracts in Dubai.
Although the amounts of these future contracts have not been revealed, they involve medium-sized desalination plants that will each require an annual investment of up to €3.5 million per cubic hectometer of desalination capacity.
Spain is currently the fourth country worldwide in terms of sea water desalanation capacity, after Saudi Arabia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
