Acciona is currently completing the desalination plant that it is constructing at the mouth of the River Thames, the largest infrastructure of this type in the United Kingdom, which will shortly begin to supply drinking water to nearly one million Londoners.
According to a statement by the Spanish group, the Thames desalination plant, backed by Thames Water, is the first plant to extract water from the river and the first plant of its type to simultaneously desalinate and reuse waste water. Thanks to these characteristics, it has been recognized as the most sustainable plant by the Global Water Intelligence 2009 awards.
The project required an investment of ₤200 million (€222 million). The plant has been built in the Thames estuary where the river reaches the sea, alongside the existing water treatment plant in Beckton, east of the British capital.
