Online commerce on the rise in Spain


E-commerce set a new sales record of €1.435 billion in the second half of the year in Spain, according to the quarterly report from the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).

 

This represents an increase of 15.8% in comparison to the first quarter of the year, and a rise of 1.4% compared with the same period of the year before.

 

When broken down by branches of activity, the biggest chunk was made up of transactions related to the tourist industry, which stood at €463.3 million, up by 12.3% on the same period in 2008. The next most important activity was direct marketing, which took €122.8 million, representing a growth of 38.6%, while gambling and betting rose by 12.6%, netting €86.6 million.

 

The revenue of online businesses in Spain, including purchases made within the country and from overseas on the websites of Spanish establishments, accounted for 54.9% of total income in the second half of the year, while the remaining 45.1% of purchases were made in online stores outside the country.
