Cristina Garmendia, Spain’s Minister of Science and Innovation, yesterday presented the advantages of Bilbao over the other two candidates, Sweden and Hungary, to the Competitiveness Council of the European Union, to host the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), one of the largest EU technology infrastructures. At the end of the meeting, she explained that there is a “certain degree of unanimity” to take the decision to locate the SNS “in early 2009”, under the Czech presidency.
Garmendia explained to her counterparts how Bilbao “better” meets the criteria required to host this infrastructure compared to Sweden or Hungary. Firstly, the Spanish candidature represents 2.5% of global scientific production in the field of neutrons, while Sweden’s scientific production in this field is three times less.
Furthermore, Spain’s management team has the best experts in the design and construction of the facilities in terms of engineering. Finally, the minister stated that Spain guaranteed that “it will meet the financial investment required to compete under optimum conditions”.
