Latin America is a key part of Telefónica’s game plan

The general manager of Telefónica Latinoamérica, José Mª Álvarez Pallete, yesterday took part in the second Press Club seminar ‘Economic trends and technologies in the Latin American market’. He used the occasion to explain the current economic situation in Latin America and the growth outlook for the telecommunications market in the region.

José Mª Álvarez Pallete explained how Latin America has experienced a historic situation over the past seven years, characterized by “widespread prosperity” and simultaneous growth in the six largest economies of the region.

Álvarez Pallete said that, in this context, Latin America is a “key area for Telefónica”. In fact, the Spanish firm is the leading foreign investor in the region, provides employment for “240,000 people” and accounts for “1% or 2% of GDP” in nearly every country.

He also highlighted the “long-term commitment” of the company in the region. This commitment is often embodied in social actions such as the ‘Proniño' initiative for children, for which it was awarded the 2008 Latin American Prize for Corporate Social Responsibility by the Social Ecumenical Forum of Argentina
